If you’re a student that’s living in London then you might want to check out the list of frugal tips on living in London as a student that we’ve put together for you. Being a student anywhere in the UK can be tough at times, but especially when you’re living in a large city such as London. Here are some tips that you should keep in mind:

  • Book Travel in Advance – If you travel from London to your parents’ home on the weekends for example then you really should book all of your travel in advance. You mightn’t think that the price difference could be too much, but it actually is! For example, travelling from London to Leeds on a Virgin train could set you back around £50 on the day, while if you paid for it a month in advance it would only cost roughly £10!
  • Borrowing Money – Borrowing money isn’t usually cheap, but the good news is that it definitely is when you’re student. In fact, so many lenders will not even charge you any interest for months or even years, so if you were to borrow money and put it in to a savings account you’d actually be making money. So, maybe it is worth thinking about getting a student credit card.
  • Discounts – There’s no excuse for not looking for discounts before you hand over your hard earned money nowadays thanks to the internet. Within a matter of seconds you can easily find discounts for whatever place you want online. For example, some cinemas in London do deals such as two for one cinema tickets which is great if you want to go to the cinema without spending a fortune.
  • Drinking – If you’re student there’s a good chance that you like to enjoy yourself by going out during the week for a few drinks. Sure, this is fine every now and again but just remember that there’s no point in spending more money than you have to when you go out! Try to set yourself a limit on how much you’re going to spend before going out, and always remember that going out every night of the week really isn’t as fun as it sounds.
  • Get a Bicycle – Travelling around London can be quite expensive at times, so why not buy a bicycle? Think about all the money that you could save by not needing to get the bus to and from college or not needing to put petrol in your car. At first you might think that a bicycle will set you back a good bit of money but you shouldn’t have a problem finding a decent one for around £150. Once you start cycling around London you’ll soon wonder why you never done it sooner!
