Ibiza – An Island with Two Personalities
Over the last decade or so, the success of budget airlines and the explosion of the holiday industry have put southern Europe and the Mediterranean within easy reach of more young British tourists, and nowhere has benefited from this more than the small Balearic Island of Ibiza.
Geographically it’s barely more than a speck in the ocean, yet Ibiza is a holiday destination that punches far above its weight. The island has made tourism into an art form; the population of little over 133,000 explodes during the tourist season, swelled by some 6million more, travelling from the Spanish mainland, France, Britain and beyond, all journeying to experience for themselves the sun, the sea, the long sandy beaches, and of course Ibiza’s legendary nightlife and club scene.
But what’s curious about the island is its dual personality – dance music superclubs and institutions such as Pacha, Space and Es Paradis sit side by side with world-class contemporary art museums and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. More so than any other destination, Ibiza can claim to have something on offer to suit anyone’s tastes.
The Party Season Begins
The party season kicks off in earnest this May, with the first must-see event of the summer at the newly-minted Ocean Club Ibiza in San Antonio. Gearing up to host the first blow-out of the year, start the party as you mean to go on by booking a VIP bed at the club, or make sure you never miss a beat by staying at the club’s adjoining hotel. One of the island’s big hitters, the club is keeping the line-up close to its chest, but you can be sure the crème de la crème of the dance music scene will be on hand to keep the party going through till sunrise.
Dance music not your thing? With June comes Ibiza Rocks’ entry into the event calendar. Pre-empting the season opening night on Friday the 7th, one of 2012s biggest breakthrough acts Jake Bugg performs a one-off show at the club on Wednesday 5th. With a summer schedule of shows by acts including Rizzle Kicks, The Vaccines and Example, Ibiza Rocks certainly does just that.
From its May kick-off, the island barely pauses for breath right through until the end of the club season in September when promoters bring out the big guns for the closing party finales. With each show outdoing the last for extravagance, fun, music and energy, meaning your last night on Ibiza will be one you will never forget – if you can remember it in the first place!
If this sounds like your perfect getaway, a cheap flight to Ibiza from airlines like Jet2.com will transport you to the heart of the action, leaving you to decide how you want to spend your hard earned summer holiday.
