Most students spend their uni days dangerously close to their overdraft. With presents to buy for your family and friends and more parties to attend than ever, money will no doubt be tight this Christmas. That doesn’t mean you have to withdraw from the celebrations altogether though. Here’s how you can decorate your student digs on the cheap.

Choosing a Tree

What’s Christmas without a tree? Whether you choose a real or fake one, it’s the number one centrepiece of the holidays. A real one will give you the most authentic experience, but it’s a lot of cleaning up to do when it starts to wilt. A fake one is easier to manage, but you’ll have to store it the rest of the year. If you’re really struggling to make room space, why not create your own Christmas tree out of books instead? Just remember not to use any that you need for your upcoming exams. Otherwise, you’ll be embroiled in a dangerous game of Jenga!

DIY Decorations

They say the best gifts are homemade and straight from the heart so why not use the same philosophy for your decorations? For next to nothing, you can make arts and crafts from old cardboard, papier mache tree ornaments, and even transform your fridge into a snowman with a few well-placed magnets. LED lights are the perfect way to add a little sparkle without blowing your budget. You can find them for cheap from online outlets like LED Hut and you might end up surprised at how versatile they can be. Choose the colours you like and you might end up leaving them up all term.

Hunting for Ideas

Try to think outside the box when it comes to decorating. Sites like Pinterest offer a treasure trove of unique ideas and there’s a ton of online guides to help you create your perfect look. Don’t worry if you can’t match what a professional designer can create. No-one will think less of you for heading for value section in the supermarket or using a bunch of mismatched decorations you stumbled across in a charity shop. You may end up running across a diamond in the rough and, if you don’t, just say you were going for a shabby chic look anyway.

If you and your flatmates only started living together in September, you’ve still got a lot to learn about each other Try to get everyone involved and make an activity out of it.
