Are you an international student in London? Then you’ll no doubt find this article helpful. How many times have you heard the locals talk what sounds like gibberish to you? Countless times, we’re sure. You see, Londoners have their own lingo and if you’re not familiar with it, you won’t have a Scooby doo (clue) what’s being said. Take a look at the lingo worth knowing, here.
Banging
This word isn’t used to describe a noise, no siree. Instead, ‘banging’ is a word to describe something positive. Who would have thought? So, if someone says to you “the food was banging”, it’ll most definitely be worth you heading there for a bite to eat yourself!
Bottle
No, we don’t mean a bottle of beer. To ‘bottle’ it is to back out of something. If your friend says he or she is bottling out of a date, it means they’re bailing!
Ends
We’re not talking about your hair’s split ends, ‘ends’ refers to a neighbourhood or area. When your fellow student says “let’s go back to your ends” it means they’re inviting themselves back to yours! Why not make an easy meal for them back at your ends?
Heads
This means people. So, if someone says “there were bare heads at the party last night”, it means there were lots of people!
Marvin
If someone is ‘marvin’, it means they’re hungry. Why they can’t just say that we don’t know, but just roll with it.
Owned
‘Owned’ doesn’t mean to be the owner of, not in London anyway. If you get ‘owned’ it means you have been made a fool of.
Rinsed
Have you ever heard someone say “that bar rinsed my money”? Well, they don’t mean that the bar washed their dosh. It means that particular bar was expensive and the money is now all gone. Let’s hope it was a banging bar, hey!
Vexed
If your flatmate says they’re “vexed” about something, it means he or she is angry! Think, have you done your fair share of cleaning? If not, then you’d better shape up, they could be vexed at you!
So, now you know of some London slang, it’ll make being a student in this ‘banging’ city that bit easier!
