Eurovision 2017 took place a few days ago in the city of Kiev, in Ukraine. Lucie Jones is the participant from UK that battled against not less than 41 participants of different countries. UK has automatically qualified for the Grand Final without having to go through the semi-finals. They were not the only one to qualify automatically, as they were selected alongside the other big five countries, including France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. Ukraine also got direct access to the Grand Final as the host country.

All the other competitors were selected from the two semi-finals ahead of the big Grand Final that happened on Saturday 13th of May in Kiev. During the semi-finals, 20 countries were selected. Some of the other countries that competed were Belgium, Cyprus, Australia, Armenia, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Greece, Azerbaijan, and Moldova.

According to bookmakers, Italy was the favourite to win the Eurovision 2017 trophy. Italy was represented by Francesco Gabbani with a rather authentic music know as Occidental Karma. Since last year, the voting system for the Eurovision song contest has been completely revamped. This is probably the biggest chance that has happened after more than four decades as to how the different countries can vote. According to the organisers, this change was implemented to create more drama and excitement. Previously, the winner could easily be determined quite early during the voting process and it didn’t quite keep the suspense. However, now each country’s vote is announced, then the viewers votes for each country are combined to get an overall score for each of the act. This certainly brings extra excitement to the competition.

The last time UK won the Eurovision is twenty years back, with the song Love Shine a Light by Katrina and Waves. Ahead of this year’s competition, the performance of Lucie Jones was revealed. This former X factor participant has a stunning performance in the form of Never Give Up On You. This great song has been co-written by Lawrie Martin, The Treatment, and former Eurovision participant Emmelie de Forest. The Irish born singer’s performance was very heart touching and many Eurovision fans thought that UK could have a chance to win the trophy again after two decades. After finding fame on X Factor, Lucie has been seen in numerous musicals at such as Ghost: The Musical, RENT, Legally Blonde, We Will Rock You and Les Miserables. However, Portugal performance was declared as Eurovision 2017 winner. This is the first time ever than Portugal has  won this song contest after Salvador Sobral performed ‘Amar Pelos Dois’.
