Car Rental for London Imperial Students
Imperial College London have announced a deal with the Hertz Car Hire Corporation to provide staff and students alike with the car rental company’s innovative 24/7 technology. It’s available for them during working hours and for personal use outside of working hours, at weekend, as well as holidays.
The deal means that the university’s 13,500 students and 3,000 staff will be given the opportunity to rent either a low emission or electric car from Hertz by the hour using the multi-functional smartphone application. The move is expected to help solve the issue of car congestion on campus and the deal is part of the university’s wider initiative to reduce its carbon footprint.
The Hertz Corporation’s Group President, Michel Taride, expressed his delight that his company have been given the opportunity to help Imperial College London in its worthy pledge to reduce carbon emissions. Mr. Taride stated that the partnership offers staff and students a ‘simple, convenient and affordable’ solution to the institution’s pledge to reduce carbon emissions, as well as congestion.
So how exactly will the move help ICL reduce its carbon footprint?
The idea is to reduce reliance on taxis and personal vehicles for trips between campuses. Since students do not have an abundance of disposable income available, it is thought that the scheme will help students with licences but no cars, rent one easily and quickly when needed.
Since membership is free to Hertz’s 300 clubs and societies and cars are available to pick up on campus, the scheme provides an affordable alternative to traditional car use.
Low emissions vehicles
A choice of four ‘low or zero emission’ cars are available across each of the campuses. Three of the cars – a Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCi, a Kia Rio with automatic transmission and an all-electric Mitsubishi IMiEV – can be found at the South Kensington campus. A VW Golf BueMotion 1.6 TDCi may be found at the college’s Silwood Park campus.
Besides those found on the two aforementioned campuses, a number of extra parking bays may be found across the Royal Brompton, Charing Cross, Hammersmith and St Mary’s in Paddington.
How can you join the scheme?
Those wishing to register for the scheme need not fear as there is no arduous registration process. Indeed, one may register easily and quickly and since membership is free, there can be little excuse not to join up.
