Interview tips – Impress your employers.
When you are new to being interviewed it can be a daunting prospect, with someone analyzing your behavior down to the smallest detail as they have a very short time to make a judgment of you. In this article I aim too help you go in to an interview, being informed of what is expected by many employers. After all fixed cost recruitment companies like Hiring People post jobs of hundreds on jobs sites so hundreds or thousands of people could be applying for a job and you’ve got to stand out from this crowd.
First impressions, these are crucial in terms of interviewing. Statistics from surveys that quizzed 2000 hiring managers, suggest that one in three of them had made their mind up about a candidate within the first 90 seconds of meeting them. A startling statistic – however fair or unfair it is to judge someone on their appearance before all else, it is part and parcel of an interview. You want to give off the best possible first impression in your interview, so it is critical that you know what determines your first impression.
- The way you act, dress and even walk. When you enter the interview you must ensure that you bear in mind what is expected of you as a potential employee.
- Your grammar and your voice. These factors can both show good (or bad) manners, and confidence.
- The way you articulate yourself, choose words carefully in an interview. 7% of employers say they judge you based on them.
When you walk into the interview it is important you are dressed between fashionable and functional, 70% of employers aren’t looking to hire an ‘overly fashionable’ employee. With 65% of hiring managers admitting that the type of clothes you wear can play a part in deciding between you and a similar candidate.
We ask Rebecca Hersey the HR Coordinator for the Kent Law Firm Thomson Snell and Passmore from Tunbridge Wells and Dartford what she looked for first in an interviewee and she said “We want to see a commitment to achieving high standards, whatever level you’re at, for yourself and for the firm. That’s very important to us – a lot of our reputation is founded on our high standards and client service. The legal market is changing rapidly, the successful lawyer in today’s market has an long term interest in the client and not just the shorter term ‘matter’ so we look for a broad perspective early on in someone’s career”
Basic mistakes that we can all be prone too are things such as not preparing for an interview. When a hiring manager asks you why you want to work for their company it is vital that you know enough about the organisation to give them a sensible answer. Another common thing that many candidates do in interviews is hide their personality and sense of humour, sometimes nerves can get the better of us and cause us to come across as very dull. It is important you are confident in yourself to be able too show the type of character you have, find the balance between being confident and shy. Show an interest in the questions your being asked, a perceived lack of interest can harm your chances of progressing past the interview stage and into the job you have applied for.
So, to be clear, it is crucial that you (as a candidate) must find the balance between being shy and confident so that your potential employer doesn’t perceive you as over confident or too shy either – there is a balance. Assess your clothing, ensure that you do not come across as ‘too fashionable’ as 70% of employers will not take to that, just be smart. And most importantly make sure you remember to articulate yourself well, so that you give off the impression you are aiming to give off. Bear in mind what your employers will be evaluating and make sure they get a brief insight into your personality for the best results.
