Hosting a bar night in your halls of residence or shared house is a university rite of passage. We have all either thrown one or been to one, but let’s face it, the back to school party theme is getting old. Now is the time to up the ante by throwing the one party that everyone will be talking about for years to come. Here are some great themes for creating the ultimate DIY bar night.

Casino nights with a splash of James Bond

Casino nights are the ultimate in decadence and many people think they have to spend hundreds of pounds hiring the proper tables and buying the most expensive single malt. This is simply not the case; you can throw an epic casino night on a limited budget, all from the comfort of your own home.

Casino nights are actually one of the easiest to stage, you won’t need many items and you can have fun setting the scene. Starting with the ultimate casino games, well you can’t miss out on a poker match or two. One of the best ways to incorporate casino games into your party is to hook your laptop to your TV and allow your friends to play for free online. There are plenty of free and fun slots games at Grosvenor for example that will keep your guests entertained for hours. Let the drinks flow, enjoy some classic games and make sure you wear a suit = perfect.

80’s Themed Flashdance Party

You may not have been born in the 80’s, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t celebrate the era of shoulder pads, neon colours and leg warmers. Era themed parties are always a great place to head for, not only because they are relatively easy to organise, but also because your guests can have great fun dressing up for the occasion. As the 80’s is synonymous with bright colours and excellent music, so this is the first place to start.

Unfortunately, the mix tape has disappeared into history books, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t make the ultimate 80’s playlist for the night. From Wham through to Duran Duran, there are plenty of classics to choose from. If you can get your hands on a tape player, than that would be the perfect match to the music, but if not, why not compile the music videos to be displayed on your TV. Throw in the 80’s fancy dress and a bottle of Blue Nun, or non-alcoholic classic soda stream, and you are on to a winning party.

Festival Fun, just without the mud

Who doesn’t enjoy a festival? Unfortunately for many of us, they are just too expensive. So, why not throw your own mini festival? As music festivals are a relaxed affair, your party can be too. Again, much like the last theme, your guests can don some willies, denim shorts and the obligatory flowers in their hair, but the nice part is that there will be no mud (unless you really want the mud, in which case check with your landlord first) This theme will rely heavily upon your music choices, but there are many other small things you can do to make your home feel like a festival; starting with putting up some tents. How many you put up will depend upon your space but one will be enough. This is a great base, from which you can add flags, bunting and your own line up posters.

All you need to do then is dance, listen to great music and enjoy the laid back atmosphere.
