Five great ways to take your mind off exam pressure
It’s a stressful time of year – you don’t need us to tell you that. When you’re getting bogged down by thoughts of exams and studying, you need things to do to take your mind off the pressure, and things to look forward to once they are over and done with. Here are a few ideas that will get you out and about and away from the stress of studying in the City for a few hours.
Rock Climbing
It might not be the obvious thing to try, but if you fancy a bit of indoor rock climbing London could well be the ideal place to get some of the stress out of your system with a burst of physical activity. The Castle Climbing Centre offers taster sessions for anyone who hasn’t tried indoor rock climbing before, and if you fancy yourself as a bit of an expert there are over 450 different routes to try. If all that activity wears you out, you can refuel at the café too.
Mile End Climbing Wall is another climber’s paradise, located inside an old pipe engineering works just five minutes from Mile End station. You can try out taster sessions there too, with groups of up to six, so you could get a group of mates together and have a laugh or even sign up for a beginner’s course if you really enjoy it.
Ten Pin Bowling
Yes, we all know that you can play bowling games on the Wii, but nothing beats the noise, smell and atmosphere of a real bowling alley. Make an event of it and book a party for a group of you where you can get a really good deal on shoe hire, food and a few games. Bowling alleys in London are no longer just havens for noisy kids’ parties; some of them have gone seriously upmarket and feature everything from trendy fifties ambience to boutique private bowling opportunities, cocktails and diners.
A Hammam Session
If your idea of relaxation involves chilling out rather than getting active, take the pressure off with a visit to a Hammam. If you’ve never been to a Hammam London has a few places that fill the bill, so you’re in for a real treat, and you’re sure to leave feeling totally blissed out. The amazing Casa Day Spa in London is an experience not to be missed, with a Moroccan style Hammam, and an introductory Hammam Experience that encompasses cleansing, steaming, exfoliation and complimentary teas and sweets. Perfect for pre-exam nerves or a post-exam treat.
Day at the Seaside
Oh we do like to be beside the seaside… there are scientific reasons why being by the sea is great for your mood, but we all know that the real reason we love the seaside is playing the penny slot machines on the pier, almost taking someone’s head off with a puck playing air hockey and scoffing hot doughnuts until you feel sick. Take your inner child for a day out to get away from it all, and make the most of some of the super cheap travel deals. National Express can do you a return from London to Southend for less than £10 during the week, and an off-peak day return on the train with a Railcard isn’t much more expensive. Going on a (non-school holiday) week day means that you’ll get on all the fairground rides faster too!
Summer Camp
Planning to get away from it all for a bit longer when the exams are finished could be the thing that keeps you going during those endless hours of studying, and what better way to get away than planning a trip to America? These trips can prove to be pretty expensive, but if you’re prepared to work while you’re there, you could sign up for a summer camp like Camp America where you can apply to work if you’re 18 or over. If you want to do something a bit closer to home, there are UK summer camps all over the holidays that are always looking for intelligent, enthusiastic people to take part and join in!
