Surviving Student Socials
You will never party as hard in life than you will when you get to university, and no matter the impending pressure from your parents, or that 3,000 word essay that needs to be handed in tomorrow morning, socialising will always prevail, because let’s face it, it’s just more fun!
We’ve all heard the legendary myths of those who have gone before us, the types who’s tales have outlived their kidneys, so to ensure that you leave with all your body parts in relatively good working order, follow these steps to keep your sanity and remain social.
Be Prepared
The big events that anyone who’s anyone will be at will be ticketed events, and if these are as good as they seem you’re going to want to purchase these tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.
Whether they’re worth the money is another question, so do your research and ask around if the event lived up to it’s hype last year.
Of course you won’t want to turn up alone, so get together a group of you and ensure you won’t be left fending for yourself once you’ve got in.
Always Eat
Whether it’s beans on toast or a cheese toasty, no matter your current skills in the kitchen ensure to eat something substantial before you hit the liquid. Heavy in carbohydrates and protein will ensure you don’t get drunk too quickly and miss out on all the fun.
You may decide to choose a take-way over cooking, but your bank balance may make you re-consider. Learn some quick and easy meals on a budget and that way you have your friends over for dinner in the knowledge you’re all ready for your big night out.
Know your Territory
Get to grips with your surroundings before you put on the beer goggles.
We’re not talking Bear Gryll’s styled stake outs, but familiarising yourself with routes into your university, into town and back and all the local pubs, will make you less likely to stumble into any peril when you’ve had one too many.
Beware of Games
Pre-drinks are a cheap way to start the night, but as soon as the suggestion of drinking games is mentioned the night can soon take a quick turn from feeling merry to forgetting how you returned home.
Of course drinking games are fun and you don’t want to be branded as the lightweight, so try to mix a lower level of alcohol.
Know the Rules
Many universities will have strict rules on drinking and smoking on campus.
The last thing you want is an embarrassing telling off or even suspension when you’ve not been aware of what’s right and wrong.
Although its rare to find any students drinking during the day, vaping has become more common but there is still a lot of confusion about where you can vape on campus and if it’s even allowed.
Check the rules and make sure you’re not out doesn’t leave you in hot water.
Be Selective
You may feel overwhelmed by the amount of invites you start receiving to house parties and events. Becoming a social butterfly is not easy task, but this doesn’t mean you need to attend them all.
We’ve all seen the paper splattered with those who’ve had one too many, and it’s easily done when the price is so cheap, but don’t be lured into being the party animal because there will always be another time and place.
Of course along with this guidance just don’t forget to have fun and embrace these carefree years.
