Top 3 London Student Fashions
Looks that are trending with the student populations in the UK capital
London is more than the focus of the world’s sport media and athletes this summer. It has also been – for many years now – the prime fashion focus of the world, not least because it’s young population drive trends and changes with daring, low-budget and curious looks that have been sourced in unlikely places, and use a lot of imagination.
From the cutesy prom dress and easy-to-wear looks that can be bought from your nearest Next, to charity-shop-sourced outfits that rock head-to-toe ‘vintage’ and thrift looks, mixing the ages, we take a look at some of the top student styles heading up London 2012.
Clashing decades: 1990s with 1940s
Something that London student fashion can always be thanked for is its dynamic and completely disregarding attitude towards history and neat divisions. One of our favourite styles that are hitting the streets and campuses right now is clashing decades – this young woman has a perfect combo of grungy Kurt-Cobain shirt and attitude with roller-ed 1940s hair. There are also some great mixes of Victoriana lace and long skirts with 1980s crop tops, tropical prints and sunglasses.
Sports-looks
Huge in general, but especially huge with students who have come up with some really innovative comments on sports style. Leggings now seem to be a uniform for those studying in London, and the shiny lycra and clashing faux-Versace 80s/90s prints that we’re seeing on bomber and athletic jackets are awesome, mixed up with hi-top trainers or comfy espadrilles. Don’t forget sunglasses, a bit of jewellery, and some red or pink lips.
Sheer panels, slivers of skin
Blame it on the weather, or blame it on prudishness, but London students have a knack of striking an intriguing balance between exposed and under-wraps. A huge trend this year is the selective and subtle revelation of skin: mini-skirts with long, sheer or translucent overskirts in peach and apricot; high waisted trousers or skirts worn with a crop top just exposing a half-centimetre of belly; dresses with a cut-away side or neck, backless long-sleeved dresses with lace details.
