A new coat for the New Year

New Year is an opportunity for all sorts of fresh starts. Another year has passed, and a whole new one beckons. This could be the year we finally realise one of our cherished dreams, achieve a personal best or resolve a long-term problem.

We never know what is around the corner for us, but as January 1 comes around we all make an attempt to give it our best shot. We make resolutions and try to stick to them and face a brand new year with fortitude and a fresh attitude.

Of course, it is not the easiest time of the year to be giving yourself a revamp. It is still cold, dark and often miserable, and often it’s really difficult to stick to diet plans, detoxes and impressive exercise regimes as we had planned.

If it is pouring with rain when you had elected to go for that first run; if you walk in the door and there is the smell of tempting hot food or if trying to survive on lettuce leaves and lemon juice is just leaving you weak and wobbly, then the initial resolutions soon come in for quite heavy assault.

But there is one way we can give ourselves a promise and stick to it. It is remarkably easy to accomplish, and it will have a direct effect on improving how we feel about ourselves. What is this magic idea? It’s a new coat! A new coat for the new year is a great idea, and one that instantly symbolises a new era. Stepping out in a new coat is a way to welcome the coming months with a positive persona. Out with the old, and in with the new. Since we wear our coats every single day they become a big part of our overall look. The quickest and most radical way to signal a new beginning is to hang up last year’s coat and shrug on a smart new overcoat.

Being good to yourself is not just about eating more healthily, trying a new sport or hobby or making more time to be with loved ones. How we look and feel does a lot for our self-esteem, and a dowdy old coat that has seen better days is never going to make you feel special when you put it on.

A warm, tailored coat on the other hand, that hugs and flatters the body, keeping you cosy at the same time as sculpting your figure, is a signal of confidence. In the bleak months of winter, a strong colour can really perk up your spirits even on the drabbest of days. It has the additional benefit of cheering other people up too.

Take a look at Bonmarche for some very appealing and attractive options that won’t break the bank. They are extremely well-made, with great designs and there is a wonderful range at the moment. In the post-Christmas period, with credit cards and other bills to worry about, this is a reassuring thought. Many women don’t like to be seen to spend money on themselves, but a good coat is an essential. Wrapping up warm and keeping yourself safe from chills and colds is important when you have others to take care of as well as yourself.

Choose a coat that flatters – both in terms of colour and style. Ring the changes for different occasions by teaming it with matching hat, gloves and scarf – an inexpensive way to brave the cold, without having to spend silly money.

So go on, it is a new year after all and a new coat is just the thing to see you march into it with a spring in your step. By donating your old coat to a charity shop you will be doing someone else a favour at the same time. A win-win resolution!
