Building British Business in an Unpredictable World
We are living in an unpredictable economic world, never more so than when the media constantly bombards us with stories of businesses that have crumbled under the pressure. This can be disheartening news for those of us leaving university and planning our futures. What is not widely reported is the success stories that prove that hard work, innovative thinking and good old fashioned business can lead to fabulous business results.
So to break the cycle of miserable business news, here is how James Eden, Owner of Private White VC a Manchester born fashion company has smashed through the economic crisis and come through smiling. Private White VC has been creating quintessentially British menswear since the end of the First World War. Back then it was Victoria Cross winner Private Jack White, who was starting out as a cloth cutter who wanted to make clothes that had a little edge to them. Now the company is booming and so it should be.
Private White VC is now run by James Eden, who wanted to save his grandfathers business and bring back some of Manchester’s illustrious UK factory clothing. The City Financier turned fashion mogul’s business decisions were based upon a love for his families business and the stories that can be told through it. Doing all this before he had even hit 30, just goes to show what passion and sound business awareness can bring.
Ok, so this all sounds very ‘fluffy’ but it took months upon months for Private White to become the million pound business that it is today. James had to scrape together the initial money, borrowing from friends and family to realise the initial launch. However, what he did have was a well thought out plan for how the company would make a turnover in the first year of trading and this was the ‘Private White Man’. A gentleman who works in the city and enjoys country strolls at the weekend. The vision to create a Private White brand, rather than supply clothing from other brands, is one of the decisions that has lead to a dramatic increase in sales. Then there is the fact that more and more people are beginning to celebrate their local and national businesses to keep them alive, one thing that Eden knew would be a great selling point – with such an embedded history, Private White is a celebration of Manchester’s textile industry as well as the UK as a whole.
The company has grown year upon year, which has lead to new openings for the brand, an online presence that is delicate to the companies branding as well as a social media presence and the opening of stores in London. This company from a humble beginning now distributes to over 25 countries worldwide, without losing its British style and flare!
This is the perfect example of one man’s dream coming into fruition, the question is, what’s your dream?
