Clearing Up Clearing

| August 14, 2013 | 0 Comments

A Level results day is almost upon us and that means sleepless nights and restless days for thousands of students across the country as they wait to see if they’ve got the results that they need to turn their conditional university place into an unconditional position. If your results should happen to be less than what you might need, then it doesn’t have to be the end of the world as UCAS’ clearing process could just provide you with the safety net that you need.

If you’ve already applied for your university place then chances are that you’ve already come across UCAS and have already spent a large amount of time browsing through their website.  UCAS lists over 300 course providers and approximately 100,000 courses across the UK and exists to help potential university students through every single step of the application process.

Even if you’re sure that you’ve done everything that you possibly can to achieve the right grades to obtain the university place of your choice, sometimes things don’t always go to plan and you might find yourself facing the very real possibility of entering UCAS’ clearing process.  The idea behind clearing is to match up universities without students to students who don’t have universities and it can be a welcome safety net to many on results day.

Clearing isn’t just for students who don’t get the grades that they needed to get into their top choice of university however, it’s also great for anyone who might have done quite the opposite and achieved much higher grades then they ever thought that they might which then opens them up to apply for other universities or anyone who’s changed their mind about the kind of course that they want to do.

Entering into the clearing process can understandably feel pretty confusing and like a daunting prospect, but the University of Greenwich has recently released an informative and inventive video in order to help to guide students through not only the worry of waiting for their results, but also through the process of applying for university through clearing.

The university’s advice is that if you’ve already changed your mind about your course or you think you might not have achieved your chosen university place, then take a look at UCAS’ website and try to get an idea of how things work. Make a note of which universities have places on the kind of courses that you’re interested in and then find out what time the clearing lines open.

It’s important to stay realistic about the type of points and qualifications that will get you on to certain courses and try to attend any upcoming information days at the universities that have available places. As soon as you have your results and the clearing lines are open, then don’t waste any time and apply straight away! After all, it might seem like the end of the world if you don’t end up at the university that you’d planned to, but it could actually turn out to be the best thing that’s ever happened to you!
