Rented properties in London join Western Europe’s worst
The BBC reported in September that housing standards in London are of a “shamefully” low standard, with landlords charging students and renters well over the odds for the accommodation. In fact, it was found that the standards of living in some of these rented properties were amongst Western Europe’s worst.
The discovery has led many to raise serious concerns about the living standards in student homes across the capital and to encourage all students to thoroughly check through their homes before they move in and all the while they live there for potentially on-going problems.
The first thing you should do as a student is to find a good deal on contents insurance from somewhere like Moneysupermarket.com to protect your belongings against any leakages or the like that might occur in your student home. It is not just leakages that you might be at threat from, though, as the BBC even found collapsed ceilings in some houses.
In light of these revelations, it would be wise for every student to check everything about a house much more thoroughly before they move into it. The last thing you want to be landed with is a serious problem you have to keep hassling the landlord for. Landlords have a bit of a bad reputation when it comes to helping students out with problems, but not all of them are so reluctant. If a problem crops up, notify your landlord straight away so he or she doesn’t think it was your fault when it is discovered at a later date. You don’t want to end up with a hefty fine after being robbed on your rent all year!
Even before you move in, you should raise any issues with your potential landlord because some things can be missed in the end-of-year checks they perform when the previous lot of students have moved out.
The cost of home and contents insurance, according to the Moneysupermarket.com Home Insurance Monitor, is actually on the decrease, so there’s no reason not to cover yourself while you’re at university.
