There are certain habits that all but the most angelic students develop. Then as the semester ends, most students are found berating themselves for spending too much and not working hard enough. It could be argued, however, that this is a total waste of time, as poor budgeting and hangovers go with the territory. There are certain habits that no student is ever going to be able to change, so don’t try — although it might be a good idea to cut back if you can. At the very least, stop beating yourself up about it. Here are the top five worst student habits that will never change (however hard you try).

Poor Budgeting

The act of becoming a student appears to cause any budgeting skills you might have had to disappear out of the window. Most students are found spending their money on takeaways and at the bar, with anything left over going on music or clothes. It all seems perfectly sensible at the time. After all, you can get a decent meal in the holidays.

Drinking Too Much

Pub crawls and hangovers are a pre-requisite, especially in your first year, because it is important to fit in. From then on the wise student continues to drink too much but not every night. If you want to keep your student status your coursework needs to be completed.

Takeaways

Takeaway food makes so much sense — it saves on washing up and you don’t even have to leave your posh student Urbanest digs. It is impossible to stop this habit completely but when you find your local Chinese sending your ‘your usual’, it’s probably time to cut back. Save yourself a fortune at your local supermarket and keep the takeaways for when you’re trying to meet a deadline.

Last-Minute Cramming

Whether it’s trying to complete that 3000-word essay for the next day, or remembering a whole lot of facts for your exam the following morning, leaving everything until the last minute seems to be a popular student pastime. It causes a lot of stress and means that you might not get that first-class degree. However, trying to organise your time around all of your social engagements would probably require a full-time PA. If you really can’t manage it then as a minimum make sure you attend the lectures and seminars. This really helps when you find yourself in a tight spot.

Work-Avoidance Strategies

Something students are brilliant at is finding lots of things to do other than the work they are supposed to be doing. These things are all perfectly justifiable and useful in their own right. However, they are not going to get that essay written. When coursework deadlines approach, your Urbanest accommodation will be spotlessly clean, which is a clear benefit. However, you do not need fluffy slippers, a perfectly cooked lasagne or any particular music playing to help you concentrate. Surely it is enough to be able to appreciate the cleanliness of your digs whilst revising for that exam. There is a balance to be struck here and it helps to be aware and realise when you are procrastinating.
