How To Move Abroad With Less Hassle
Moving house is often rated as one of the most stressful things that we can do in our lives – but when that move means packing your belongings into an airplane rather than a van, then that stress can be tripled.
But, that being said, it is also very exciting, waving goodbye to rainy Britain as you embark on a new adventure in the sun. This is why more and more people are choosing to do it, particularly students either during or following on from, their studies.
So the big question is; how do you make this move across seas as hassle-free as possible?
1. Create a checklist
First things first, to take the stress out of any move, you need to make a checklist. List everything you need to do, in the order it needs doing – then you can tick it off as you go and ensure that nothing gets left out.
You would be surprised how easy it is to forget even the most important details in all the excitement, when all you want to do is daydream about sitting on a beach with the sea lapping at your feet.
2. Get your paperwork in order
Is your passport in date? You won’t get very far without it – so this is one of the first things you need to get sorted. The sort out any paperwork you need for the country you are moving to and inform all the relevant companies of your move. Create a folder, so you can keep all these important documents safe and in order.
3. Organise your belongings
A key part of the move is organising the belongings you are going to take with you and how you are going to get them there. Firstly, there is no point transporting items that you don’t really need – so have a clear out.
Throw out the rubbish, donate what you can to charity and sell the rest – earning yourself some extra pennies to put towards the move! Finally, if you have items left that you want to keep, but can’t take with you, then put them into storage units. Then you can collect them whenever you are ready or if you do move back to Blighty.
4. Start packing early
Start early and as you place items in boxes ensure you label each one with what is inside. It’s also a good idea to pack a separate box of essentials – which you will need on the first day. When you finally touch down in your new home, it will feel like forever since you packed up your old one, so the last thing you want is to be hunting through boxes for the kettle and a tea cup!
5. Tie up any loose ends
You really don’t want any hassle in the first few weeks, whilst you are settling into your new life, so ensure you have tied up any loose ends. These will be far harder to sort out once you are a plane journey away.
The key to really taking the hassle and therefore stress out of the big move abroad, is to do everything you can as soon as possible. That way you can sit back and look forward to moving day, rather than worrying about it.
