Travel industry careers — where you can find a job in London

| September 13, 2018 | 0 Comments

London has been a victim of gentrification for a long time, its councils demolishing rickety tenement buildings in favour of swish apartments designed for media moguls, Russian oligarchs and National Lottery winners.

It’s the most expensive city to live in across the UK, and most workers have to commute for more than an hour to reach their workplace every morning.

But while the Big Smoke is quite rightly viewed as a place for elites, there are plenty of jobs on offer that can keep a student afloat during their studies.

And for many, a career in the wildly successful tourist industry around London could be exactly what you need for some extra shrapnel in your pocket.

If you’re a fresher visiting the city for the first time, your job in tourism will also give you the perfect opportunity to discover the city. And if you’re a grassroots Londoner, being able to make the most of your travels will allow you to see the city with fresh eyes, and who knows – you might discover someplace new.

With that in mind, here are three London-based travel industry jobs that are flexible for students and could open the doors to an exciting career.

London tour buses

The London tour bus is a staple of the city’s tourism industry, and it’s easy to see why.

For sightseers, a reasonably priced tour bus ticket provides the opportunity to snap photographs from an ideal vantage point, learn more about the city from a knowledgeable tour guide, or hop on and off the bus for a simple and straightforward commute.

There are many tour bus companies operating in London, and that means plenty of employment opportunities.

On a basic level, you could be a tour guide, a bus driver or a ticket seller. But if you’re more interested in the managerial side of things, then why not enquire about an office job for a London tour bus operator. Coordinating several buses through the busy streets of London is no mean feat – so just imagine how it’ll look on a CV.

Stansted Airport

Stansted Airport is one of the busiest flight hubs in the UK and, as such, is teeming with potential employment opportunities for the more travel-oriented student.

If you want to travel the world, then becoming a flight steward or stewardess for one of the airport’s many flight operators is a perfect opportunity.

But if you need a reliable commute home, we’d recommend finding a job with one of the services provided by Stansted. A perfect example is Stansted Airport parking – if you’ve got a clean driver’s license and the right attitude, then becoming a parking valet at a reputable company like Looking4.com could be the ticket.

Otherwise, you could find gainful employment in any number of airport services, whether that means working in the Duty Free or helping as a baggage handler.

This is a bottomless well of opportunities – so grab one while you can.
