University has always been seen as quite an expensive endeavour; nowadays it’s more than just the student loans that are costing students when they move out of home and into university accommodation. In fact, according to recent studies, students are now taking over £2,000 worth of items to university. This is a staggering amount when you consider how rife theft can be in highly populated student areas, even more so when such highly desirable gadgets and devices are up for grabs.

In a series of recent articles and news stories surrounding the risk of university halls and students, it was found that one in three students will be targeted by thieves while they’re away at university studying. Therefore, before you set off to experience the world of higher education, it might be worth looking into insuring your items or risk getting stung with hefty charges if your items get stolen or damaged (nobody wants to be spending their student loan on replacing expensive items/devices).

There are several options you can check out prior to leaving home, firstly, you could look to see whether your items could be included in your parent’s content insurance. Some insurers let their packages cover family members currently away from home at no extra cost. Sadly however, there are clear problems with opting for this type of insurance, while it might sound good to not have to pay anything towards coverage, the limits and amount of money you would receive should your items be damaged or stolen are a lot smaller and stricter than if you had your own policy. Furthermore, if your parents’ content insurance only covers up to £4,000, with more and more university students taking over £2,000 worth of stuff to uni, it might be better looking elsewhere and paying content coverage yourself.

Standalone cover isn’t quite as daunting as it first sounds, in fact, more often than not you can get a bespoke package, perfectly suited to your individual needs and university centric lifestyle – the NUS recommend Endsleigh Insurance Services for their student specific insurance.

Furthermore, the excess cover for students tends to be much lower, normally around the £20+ for replacing a laptop or another electronic item, whereas it normally costs closer to £200. There is also the fact that some insurers will even cover your downloaded files, which is brilliant when you consider just how heavily you’ll rely on internet resources for your coursework and exams.
